Canadian Firearms Safety Course - PAL

Two qualified instructors guide you through both the non-restricted and restricted course in two days. Normally we start on a Saturday morning and finish testing on Sunday afternoon.

Non Restricted CFSC

The Canadian Firearms Safety Course (CFSC) is the course you are looking for if you want to go hunting with a firearm or to go target shooting in any of the many recreational shooting sports. This Licence allows the holder to purchase rifles and shotguns normally used for hunting and target shooting. It is also a requirement to purchase ammunition for your firearms. Trap and skeet shooters, as well as small bore rifle and long range target shooters will need this licence.

Although a student used to be able to challenge the test, it is now a requirement that students take the complete course and pass the written and practical tests.

Completion of this course makes a student eligible to apply for a Possession and Acquisition Licence (PAL). Taking this course is also a prerequisite for taking the Canadian Restricted Firearms Safety Course (CRFSC).

Topics covered in the CFSC include:
  • the evolution of powder, types of firearms, ammunition, and actions;

  • safety practices with firearms;

  • types of ammunition and their uses;

  • how firearms actions work;

  • carrying firearms safely;

  • firing positions;

  • cleaning and care of rifles and shotguns;

  • firearms owners responsibilities; and,

  • legal storage, display, and transportation of rifles and shotguns.

Canadian Restricted Firearms Safety Course

If you wish to join the many owners who enjoy collecting or target shooting with handguns and other restricted firearms, you will need to take the Canadian Restricted Firearms Safety Course (CRFSC) in addition to the CFSC. You will also need this course to inherit or receive restricted firearms from relatives or others.

Topics in the CRFSC include:

  • the different actions of handguns;

  • safety practices with restricted firearms;

  • different types of ammunition and its uses;

  • loading, unloading, aiming and firing procedures for handguns;

  • care and cleaning of restricted firearms;

  • restricted firearms owners responsibilities; and

  • legal use, transportation, storage, and display of restricted firearms.
